These are a few pieces going into my digital portfolio for my drawing class!

I think the main thing I’ve learned about my drawings is that most of the time the things that I am praised for were done completely on accident or a result of pure, unadulterated laziness. I’m not sure what that says about my competence as a draw-er, but there it is.

Also, never take an art class for an easy A. I spent more time doing work for my drawing class than I did for my pchem class.

Today I stumbled across the very first drawing I ever did using my tablet (back in 2008). I got all nostalgic and decided to redraw it! I still don’t know how to draw backgrounds (lol my lame attempt at mountains…) or grass…but I think there’s been some improvement :p

I started my drawing class! We did figure drawing yesterday and it was SO FUN.

While I was definitely better at figure drawing than I was at still life (oh my goshers it was SO bad….), I still have a tendency to exaggerate proportions like cartoons…but it was still a good time! And it was a lot more informative than posemaniacs and other reference sites :)

I used to pretend I was good at photography and experiment with light sources and shadows. The photos were crap, but the high contrast turned out to be quite a challenge and really fun to paint!

Oh hey, I’m actually starting a drawing class this quarter and I’m really nervous…I obviously favour digital art…mostly because I’m lazy. I’m not sure I’ll do well without an undo button and the option of flipping an image to check for balance. I guess we’ll see what happens : )

A couple weeks ago, I submitted my application to study abroad at a university in London for autumn quarter 2013 and I receieved my nomination!!! I’ve been learning British slang from Phineas and Ferb and JacksGap (& friends). So I guess you could say I’m pretty pro : P

I know it’s SO lame, but I adore the Tinker Bell movies. They are unbelievably cute and wonderful. Except the third one pushes the cheese factor a bit far…

Anyhow, I was watching Secret of the Wings (which is my fav!!) and I started doodling this :) I lovelovelove Vidia. Her gigantic ego is so endearing. Girl’s got some SASS. I have such a soft spot for antagonists. Especially antagonist turned anti-heroes. OH and I saw the trailer of Quest for the Queen and AHHHH I AM SO EXCITED!!

I actually sketched the whole gang, but since Vid is my favourite, I took a mega ultra long break from studying to create a lineart and colour her. The rest will have to wait til my next study break~

My most favouritest book in the whole wide world is Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. For those of you that don’t know, Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle was based on a book! And even though Miyazaki is my homie, I like the book about a hundred times more than the movie. The plot is considerably different and much more intricate. Plus Howl doesn’t look quite so effeminate in my head….

I’ve been rereading it for the hundredth time (my copy is literally falling apart) and I decided to do a quick doodle of the last scene because it’s just so darn sweet ♥

If there are any other fairy tale-esque lovers out there, or curious Miyazaki fans, I DEF recommend HMC. It’s wonderful!

I wouldn’t really know since I just spent the last 5 hours taking diagnostic tests for the MCAT prep course I’m taking.

5 hours.

I spent 5 hours on this gorgeous Saturday afternoon staring at my computer answering some of the most ridiculous and complete memory-based (e.g. do you remember that one equation you used in physics II when you calculate the change in density of blah blah blah? Yeah, ME EITHER.) exam questions I’ve ever seen.

After these countless hours — oh wait, I did count: 5 freakin’ hours — they generated a score for me.

20.

20.

TWENTY.

So basically they wasted 5 hours of my day just so they could tell me that I’m stupid and I’m never getting into med school.

Seriously guys, if you wanted to make me feel bad about myself, you could have just called me fat and ugly and been done with it. I could have used the remaining four hours, 59 minutes, and 58 seconds to flip you off repeatedly, cry, eat my feelings, do some studying, cry some more, watch some Phineas and Ferb, and make pancakes.

But here I am, grumpily typing this post instead of chowing down on pancakes.

Once upon a time I uploaded a preview WIP of Ariel. Nearly a year later….IT IS STILL A WIP! Yeeeeeey!

It occurred to me that I have no plan to ever FINISH-finish this. It’s become more of a way for me to test out new styles and techniques when I’m bored. I don’t draw nearly often enough to see any real improvement, but I’ve gotten a smidge better (at least I think so). I look forward to how this will look in 2014!

Which reminds me! I’m crazy late, but HAPPY NEW YEAR! (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ

My new year’s resolution is to be a little nicer to the people around me. Just a little though. My disagreeable personality is part of my charm ;)

The strangest thing happened...

I was wandering around aimlessly and somehow ended up on the other side of the planet in a little place known as 日本 to the locals, but the rest of us know it as Japan.

Dunno if I mentioned this anywhere, but I’m a halfie (Japlankan or SriLankanese — whichever you prefer). Right-o. So my obaachan lives in this cute little neighbourhood inhabited by a seemingly infinite amount of adorable old folk. And lots of cute doggies in sweaters!!!! There are a few pretty shrines nearby, too. But the best part is definitely the sushi store down a really small shopping district around the corner. Basically went there every day and ate everything.

If you get a chance, I definitely recommend going to the Metropolitan building’s observatory. The view is kind of amazing (I’d imagine it’s stunning at night…but also crowded).

Also you get to see this extremely helpful sign in the restrooms. I always confuse western and traditional toilets. They just look so similar.

So anyway, we were going to go to Super Octoberfest at the Tokyo Dome, but our plans kind of got messed up…regardless, we got to see the gorgeous Christmas tree the hotel puts up every year!! And we went out to eat at a nice Italian restaurant near Tokyo Eki…yummmmyyyyy

Tokyo Eki is gorgeous inside and out! And it’s close to Ginza which definitely has a Manhattan feel to it. Except the windows on buildings are about 6 times shinier. And there are a lot more Asian people.

AND THEN WE SAW A ROTATING 4 MILLION DOLLAR DISNEY CHRISTMAS TREE MADE ENTIRELY OUT OF GOLD.

Eventually we made a trip to Ueno which is metaphorically crawling with pandas and delicious food (ノ°ο°)ノ I got a panda in bread form, calendar form, keychain form, and sock form. Did I mention I really like pandas?

There are also loads of cake shops like Cozy Corner that sell….well, THAT. Do you see that? DO YOU? I will never understand how Japanese girls stay thin. God I just want to eat everything. Literally everything.

Besides incredible food and cute toys, Japan has a remarkable talent for effortlessly integrating traditional settings into the middle of crammed city buildings and city people. There are loads of parks scattered throughout Tokyo and they are such a pleasure to walk around. We went to Hamarikyu which is a really relaxing place — plus we picked an awesome day to go! It was a little chilly but not too many people were around (which is a big deal because a lot of the time it feels like everyone in Tokyo made a joint decision to go to the exact same place at the exact same time as you).

Anyhow, it’s such an odd park because you sit down at the tea house drinking tea, staring out over a lovely view of the pond and all the traditional architecture…with monster skyscrapers in the background.

From here we rode a waterbus down Tokyo Bay, under about a million and five bridges. It looked like Tokyo Skytree was just a stone’s toss away, but, in fact, it is just so ginormous it always looks like that.

We took the waterbus to Asakusa. It’s a pretty touristy spot so there are tons of foreigners. During the summer they have some beastly Kakigori which is…the Japanese equivalent to shaved ice, I guess? It’s delish, and that’s all you really need to know. Green tea with red bean and mochi is the best kind, hands down.

From Asakusa, we took the subway to Ueno again to go to AbAb (a cutesy shopping complex) and an EARTHQUAKE hit. I’ve visited Japan enough times to have experienced my fair share of earthquakes — but on the whole they are small and last maybe 5-10 seconds or so. But this one was the biggest I’ve experienced. It was the result of a 7.3 mag earthquake that hit a city pretty far from Tokyo; and while it wasn’t too big in itself, it was still strong enough to make all the clothing displays and shelves shake like mad. The scariest part was that we were on the 5th floor and could feel the building sway a bit. A couple of (the longest) minutes (of my life) later, the shaking stopped and everyone went back about their business. But I confirmed something I’ve long suspected: Mother Nature is scary.

Goshers this post is SO long….Alrighty, to end my trip I celebrated my 20th birthday because it’s a pretty special occasion in Japan! They call it hatachi and it’s a celebration of transitioning into “adult”hood. So I got my hayer diiid and wore the kimono my mum wore when she turned 20 ~~back in the Paleolithic Era~~ a couple years ago. The kimono was stunning! It looks kind of orange in the light but it was actually this really rich red with an intricate design hand-painted on.

It was a cool experience, but definitely not something I’m in any hurry to go through again. It’s uncomfortable and forever taking. Here’s a video of me getting ready!

OK, not really…but it’s seriously a lot like that. Minus the singing. Mostly.

And that was that! If I measure how much fun I had in terms of how much weight I gained during my trip, I’d say it was pretty much a blast : P

Well finals are going…SWELL. CLEARLY. YEP.

Oh hey guess what! I made a pretty big decision last week! I am seriously considering changing my major to…….CHEMISTRY! Turns out that biochem and I are meant to just be friends. I don’t like mind games, and biochem may look like chemistry…but inside it’s all biology.

So yeah, that happened.

Oh and I’m totally stoked for my forensic pathology class next quarter! Seriously so stoked that it borders on creepy. ヽ( ﾟヮﾟ)ﾉ
